Prayer in Evangelism

in EVANGELISM SERIES, TRAINING AND DISCIPLESHIP

Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields” (Matthew 9:35-38 NLT). This verse of scripture shows the Lord’s deep love and compassion toward everyone he encountered. It also shows how passionate he was for the lost and his concern that they be reached with the message of salvation through him. He stresses the importance of praying that more workers are sent out to harvest the fields of lost souls who are wandering in spiritual darkness.

Prayer is very crucial and foundational in the life of a Christian. God has provided his children with direct access to communicate with him. In our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we can approach God’s throne of grace boldly in a time of need to receive mercy and help (Hebrews 4:16). We can pray to God when we are anxious, and make requests, thank him for what he has done and be peaceful in our circumstances (Philippians 4:6-7). We can even intercede on behalf of others (Ephesians 6:18). God wants to hear from his children. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, it says that we should pray continually. I have personally witnessed God’s answer to prayer in my life and in the lives of others on countless occasions.

Jesus prayed frequently (Matthew 14:23, Matthew 26:36, Mark 6:46, Luke 5:16). He taught his disciples how to pray in Matthew 6:5-13. In one of his most powerful prayers in John 17, he prayed for our unity and protection. Jesus also prayed for those who will come to know him personally through the spreading of the Gospel. In John 17:20, Jesus prayed, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message…”

Why is prayer so important in evangelism? Without communicating with God regularly your witness as a Christian will not be effective. It is vital to be in constant communication with God who causes the seeds of the Gospel that we plant and water to grow (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). It’s also very important to be in constant intercession for the lost, for the unity of the church in reaching the lost, as well as for protection when sharing the Gospel. Here are some other things to add to your prayer list:

1. Pray for you and your church to have a deeper compassion for the lost (Romans 10:14-15).
2. Pray for God to provide you with opportunities to share the Gospel.
3. Pray for God to help you be an effective witness for him (2 Timothy 3:14-16).
4. Once you have committed your life to sharing the Gospel, spiritual attacks will come.  Therefore, pray for God’s protection over your life (Ephesians 6:12).
5. Pray for God to help you to be gracious and loving toward the lost (2 Timothy 2:23-26, Colossians 4:5-6).
6. Pray for God to help you to be bold and be prepared at all times to share the Gospel (1 Corinthians 16:13-14 NLT, 1 Peter 3:15).
7. Pray for God to give you the desire to study the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15).
8. Pray that you remain obedient in fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus Christ and that your passion for sharing the Gospel remains ignited (Matthew 28:18-20).
9. Pray for God to prepare the heart of the person you feel led by the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel with.
10. Pray for Christian missionaries.
11. Pray for Christian missionaries serving in countries where it is illegal to preach the Gospel.
12. Pray for perseverance and protection for Christians who live in countries where they are persecuted and have to evangelize and worship in secret.
13. Pray for the Lord to send more workers into his fields (Matthew 9:37-38 NLT).

In addition, in your personal prayer time pray for friends, family, coworkers, neighbors and acquaintances who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior. I usually pray these scriptures and insert the person’s name I’m praying for:

2 Timothy 2:25-26
God, please grant (insert person’s name) repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

Acts 26:18
Lord, please open (insert person’s name) eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in You.

Lastly, ask God to help you remain committed to praying over all of these areas so that you are effective in your personal and relationship evangelism. As you intercede for those who are lost, notate the date when you began praying for their salvation and the date that God gave the increase. You will be so encouraged by God’s faithfulness. The more you pray for opportunities to share God’s grace, the more you will hear God’s heartbeat for those who do not know him personally. The rhythm of your heartbeat will align closer and closer to God’s.
